The inspiration for these rustic little paper-covered notebooks are the French Alamanachs of the late 18th-century. Every element of these little books is made entirely by hand.
The blocks are made from 40 pages of handmade Khadi paper and they have been sewn together with linen thread. Rather than trimming them, we have left the pages with their deckle edges.
The original Almanachs were covered in a hand-blocked paper that is known in France as 'Papier Dominoté', or Domino paper. We have lovingly replicated one of these Domino paper patterns, an eye-boggling geometric patter. The pattern is hand-printed in black ink on handmade paper and then is painstakingly hand coloured in two colours using stencils, sometimes as in the originals we go a bit beyond the lines, but that adds to their charm. As was common every scrap of the Domino paper is used and some of the copies will have a border and our trademark on them - it's pot luck whether you get that or not!! Like the originals, these books are chunky, rough, and ready and full of texture and we love them.
