A pair of tall 12 inch (30cm) hand-dipped 100% beeswax taper candles. The diameter is approximately 3/4 inch or 2cm. These candles can be used for a variety of purposes, on the dinner table, in your favourite candlestick on the mantlepiece or for Orthodox church use.
The fragrance and gentle glow of a lighted beeswax candle is delightful. All the candles we produce at the Guild of Theophilus are made using a time-honoured historic process - they are each lovingly dipped by hand.
We use only 100% natural light coloured beeswax for our candles. We are careful about the quality of wax we source and it comes directly from the hive and is locally filtered. We don’t process it further, we simply melt the wax when it comes to us and strain it to ensure no hive debris enters the dipping vat. As the beeswax is melted, our studio is filled with its gorgeous and characteristic scent.
Our candles are not mould made but are dipped by hand. Cotton wicking is wrapped around a frame and this is dipped into the molten wax in the vat repeatedly and the candle is built up layer by layer. This hand dipping process creates naturally tapered candles. Some of the candles in our range require thirty dips to achieve the correct diameter. After dipping, while they are still warm, the candles are rolled on glass to ensure that they are even before a final careful dipping in the vat gives the candle a smooth surface finish. As the candles dry and cure, they develop a natural mottling.
It is a time-consuming process to make candles this way, but we think it is worth it. As a handcrafted and traditional item, each candle will be slightly irregular and a little different from the next, but we think that you will enjoy these qualities as much as we do.
